An overview of the Korean Literature Translation Workshop in 2023

On August 19, 2023, the Faculty of Korean Language and Culture - Van Lang University held the closing ceremony of the Korean Literature Translation Workshop in 2023 - a training program on Korean literary translation skills for students majoring in Korean, with the companionship of the Korean Literature Translation Institute.

The event was attended by Dr. Nguyen Thi Hien - Dean of the Faculty of Korean Language and Culture, Van Lang University; Mr. Gil Ho Jin - Director of the Korean Language Center in Ho Chi Minh City; Writer Trinh Bich Ngan - Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City Writers’ Association; Dr. Le Dang Hoan – Member of Vietnam Writers’ Association, Senior Advisor of Hanoi Polytechnic College (online attendance); MSc. Chanh Cao Ngoc Linh – Vice Dean of the Faculty of Korean Studies, Van Hien University (online attendance); MSc. Cao Thuy Oanh – Lecturer of Korean Studies, Van Hien University; MSc. Nguyen Trung Hieu - Lecturer of Korean Studies, Hong Bang International University; MSc. Luong Quoc An – Lecturer of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages – Information Technology; Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Ly - Head of Korean Language of Van Lang Saigon College; along with lecturers of the Faculty of Korean Language and Culture and 17 students participated in the Korean Literature Translation workshop in 2023.

In 2023, the Korean Literature Translation Workshop selected “Da Hanh'', a short story by writer Pyun Hye Young and 22 poems from " Ngam em nhu mot đoa hoa", a poetry collection by poet Na Tae Ju, for translation practice. Especially, students had the opportunity to meet face-to-face with writer Pyun Hye Young and gain a deeper understanding about her content and message during the framework of the events.

Mr. Gil Ho Jin - Director of the Korean Language Center in Ho Chi Minh City shared: "I am absolutely delighted to accompany the Faculty of Korean Language and Culture - Van Lang University within the framework of the Korean Literature Translation Workshop in 2023. I hope that the activities undertaken in the workshop will help students gain more useful knowledge, nurture and pursue their passion for Korean. Hopefully after the course, you will still keep the fire of passion and become excellent translators."

Accompanying the Workshop for the past 3 months, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association - Writer Trinh Bich Ngan sent congratulations to the Faculty and students and expressed her desire that they will produce more excellent translated works and establish a sustainable connection between Vietnamese and Korean literature.

Dr. Le Dang Hoan, a lecturers' representative of the course, said he was very proud that the students had completed their work perfectly and appreciated the way they utilized words and conveyed emotions in each verse.

At the end of the Workshop, student Tran Thi My Duyen's translated work made a strong impression on the instructors because of the polish and clarity in each word, making her the best student of the course in 2023. Hopefully, the course will increasingly expand in scale and content in various fields such as film and television, news, webtoons, producing more outstanding translators as well as promoting literary and cultural exchanges between Vietnam and Korea.
