Behind the spotlight, what opportunity for Fashion Stylists?

Aiming to equip students with knowledge of professional style and necessary application skills, as well as provide a chance to learn the “behind the spotlight” story for Art students, on July 13, 2023, Student Success Center and Style - Republik co-organized the Talk Show “Fashion Stylist - The story behind the spotlight”.

A fashion stylist is a person who is responsible for managing and combining different types of costumes and accessories for customers at various events, ensuring that the outfit is suitable for the customer’s style and body, as well as the event property. Fashion stylists can work individually or for a specific fashion brand. They can work in fields such as Personal stylist, Commerce, Photography, Catwalk, Product, Blogging, Film/Television,…

Attending the talk show “Fashion Stylist - The story behind the spotlight”, Fashion Stylist Dien Huynh Linh (also known as Stylist Dien) and Fashion Stylist Freddy Nguyen are young people who have had significant marks in the Vietnamese fashion industry, building their attractiveness and personal brand from their own name.

In recent years, the fashion industry in Vietnam has been dramatically developing and exceptionally contributing to the domestic economy. In 2023, this field continues to be one of the fastest-growing sectors, increasing in terms of production, export, and domestic consumption. The strong growth of fashion promotes job opportunities and enlarges many new professions with limitless potential, and among them, Fashion Stylist is a suitable place for young people to unleash their creativity.

Making a stylist recognizable to the fashion community is a big challenge. 5% of success comes from luck and the remaining 95% comes from effort. Freddy Nguyen shared: “If you want to be famous in this field, you must be mentally prepared to be under a lot of pressure. If you want to build a personal brand, it is even more challenging when you have to manage capital and operate the company's works. Getting through all those hardships, I am more proud to maintain my love of fashion. I don’t see Fashion Stylist as a career but a passion. A career only comes to a certain point and then stops, but passion is like a friend always by my side, motivating me to keep moving on the journey ahead.”

Fashion Stylist is not a profession for a specific group. Young people can totally become professional fashion stylists if they are passionate enough and have abilities to create, mix and match fashion items. Stylist Dien advised those who want to try and get involved: “In order to work in this field, thinking about fashion is a must. Besides, you need to constantly acquire knowledge about culture and history. The journey of personal branding should start right when you are still in school. All of the experiences whether from working with any small brand or famous KOLs/influencers are valuable experiences and potential relationships that can help you connect with this career more deeply in the future.”

The story of creativity has always been a thread that attracts young people nowadays. The opportunities and discussions with celebrities and experts in the fields are one of the effective learning methods at Van Lang University. From the general story, each of the students will learn their own lessons, motivating themselves to explore, experience, and get involved to continue their passion and succeed in the near future.
