On June 28, 2023, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities organized a workshop on “Career orientation for Psychology students”, aiming to help students have a deeper understanding of career opportunities available in the psychology field, creating a solid foundation and ensuring learners find the right direction for the future.
Annually, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Psychology Department regularly organize three programs that allow students to experience all three working environments: hospital, school and company. During the workshop, three special guests, including MSc. Cao Minh Hai, Vice Dean of Faculty of Medical Psychology, HCMC Psychiatric Hospital; MSc. Dinh Thao Quyen, Educational psychologist and lecturer at HCMC University of Education; Ms. Tri Truc Nguyen, Deputy Manager of Human Resources Department, Katinat Joint Stock Company, shared their valuable experiences as long-standing seniors in the field with the students.
The initial orientation is one of the decisive factors to create the motivation to follow the chosen majors and confidently pursue the future career. To determine their own orientation, students need to have a comprehensive perspective, thoroughly understand the problem, and make choices that best suit themselves. MSc. Cao Minh Hai shared an honest perspective from his years of experience in the profession: “It is the advice, encouragement and experiences of the seniors that are the most powerful motivation to strengthen your own decisions. You need to set goals right from the first year. Degree - Competence - Attitude are three important factors to stay with your profession. Therefore, make the most of all opportunities during internships to gain valuable knowledge for yourself.”
MSc. Dinh Thao Quyen, speaking from the perspective of an educational psychologist, shared her reflections of an inspiring journey for her passion for Psychology in an educational setting: “Psychology in primary, secondary, and high school levels requires you to work with different age groups. Due to the age group difference, the supporting content also carries many distinct characteristics. Taking care of students' and faculty members’ mental health, collaborating with colleagues, and supporting parents, teachers, and principals are essential tasks you'll need to get used to. It's crucial to clearly define what the university and you need to do to address students' issues. However, be careful not to be limited by frameworks, as it may affect your professional quality.”
Representing the human resources department of a large enterprise such as Katinat, Ms. Tri Truc Nguyen, Deputy Manager of Human Resources Department of Katinat Joint Stock Company has different experiences compared to the two fields mentioned above. The speaker highlights the human resources profession as a highly promising career choice for the future. HR professionals, according to Ms. Nguyen, are not merely recruiters but also play roles as intelligence agents, caregivers, selectors, evaluators, and profile analysts.. HR consists of four main areas: planning, organization, recruitment, and human resources. Regardless of one's field of study, excellent opportunities abound within the realm of human resources. And employers must constantly improve their multidisciplinary knowledge to accurately recruit individuals suitable for the business.
In an era of turbulence and risk, humans encounter many dangers and negative emotions, and psychological disorders can be challenging to see with the naked eye. It is the passion, intuition, and serious working attitude that are the keys for psychological students to understand the problems, and help the community to maintain good mental health regardless of working environment.
