On March 7, 2023, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Van Lang University to implement the Green School project in Ho Chi Minh City, enhancing the capacity building of students and teachers for environmental protection in the city.
The event was attended by leaders from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Natural Resources and Environment:
The event also has the participation of the Board of Van Lang University, including Assoc. Dr. Tran Thi My Dieu, President; Dr. Vo Van Tuan, Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President; Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Vice President; MA. Bui Pham Lan Phuong, Vice President; MSc. Hoang Son Dien, Executive Director, and representatives from the Faculty of Environment, Admissions and Communication Department, and Student Affairs Department.
During the signing ceremony, Mr. Duong Chi Dung - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, stated: “We are honored to cooperate with one of the universities that have made significant contributions to the educational and training activities not only in Ho Chi Minh City but throughout the country. Van Lang University’s activities in recent years have been closely linked with various aspects of the city, bringing practical values to the community. The Department of Education and Training has been focusing on activities for educating skills and environmental awareness-raising activities among students in recent years through competitions, sports, and professional activities, in collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. We aim to continue developing effective models for environmental work and sustainable development in partnership with Van Lang University. These models will directly impact the educational effectiveness of schools in Ho Chi Minh City, both in terms of their content and depth.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi My Dieu, representing Van Lang University, stated that VLU has collaborated with Ho Chi Minh City on several valuable environmental projects over the years, including implementing a Green Industrial Park for the city, sorting waste at the source, and raising awareness about environmental issues among various target groups. Van Lang University is committed to carrying out the Green School cooperation project with the Department of Education and Training using the best resources available, humans, and materials. Our goal is to empower educational institutions to become sustainable development units and contribute to the overall sustainability of the city
As per the terms of the MOU, Van Lang University will cooperate with the Department of Education and Training to implement a series of programs aimed at achieving the goal of Green School in Ho Chi Minh City:
Training to teachers responsible for educating students on environmental protection, enhancing their knowledge and capacity in areas such as solid-waste management, water, and electricity conservation, using clean energy, and climate change adaptation;
Continuing to spread, evaluate, and recognize the results of "Green Schools" through the organization of the "Green School" contest for the 2022-2023 school year.
Implementing the program to build green space, and plant new trees in schools.

The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City and Van Lang University aims to promote the strengths of both respective parties through their cooperation project, which is expected to create practical value and contribute to the implementation of the Ministry of Education and Training's policy of comprehensive educational innovation, as well as align with Ho Chi Minh City's leadership direction for education. One of the key objectives is to establish a 'happy school' model that provides advanced and innovative knowledge to students, ultimately helping them become global citizens in the new era.
