(VLU, March 16, 2023) - The Fukushima - Vietnam Friendship Association has recently collaborated with Van Lang University to organize a cultural exchange program featuring Haiku poetry and Shakuhachi flute. This program is one of the events marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan (September 21, 1973 - September 21, 2023).

As part of a series of bilateral cooperation activities between the two countries in various fields, including education, commerce, and tourism, the Fukushima-Vietnam Friendship Association successfully organized academic exchange programs in Hanoi (March 6) and in Hue (March 8).
The Cultural Exchange Program of Japanese Haiku Poetry and Shakuhachi Flute at Van Lang University was attended by Mr. Hideyuki Shiraishi - Consul General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City, Assoc. Dr. Tran Thi My Dieu – Dean of Van Lang University; Tachibana Ryomei - Flute player, Mr. Chinao Teramoto - Education Research Specialist of the Fukushima - Vietnam Friendship Association, Ms. Nguyen Thien Kim - Vice President of the Vietnam - Japan Kamishibai Paper Drama Association, etc...

The Cultural Exchange Program of Japanese Haiku Poetry and Shakuhachi Flute was an opportunity for officials, lecturers, staff, and students of Van Lang University to enjoy various types of Japanese culture from veteran artists.
The most notable part of Japanese - Vietnamese Haiku poetry exchange was the collection of Haiku poems titled "Fukko no Kizuna" written by the Haiku Goto Shoson, depicting his firsthand experiences and feelings after the historic natural disaster in Japan in 2011. Mr. Chinao Teramoto, an Education Research Specialist and member of the Fukushima-Vietnam Friendship Association, recited Haiku poems that vividly scene of the disaster and the remarkable renaissance spirit as well as the connection from the international community, including Vietnam.

The Japanese representative presented traditional costumes to the Vietnamese delegate.

During the program, the audiences were not only introduced to the Shakuhachi flute (bamboo flute) through familiar songs of the two countries: Nada Soso (Okinawa music), Diem xua (by Trinh Cong Son), Trong com (Vietnamese Music)… performed by flute player Tachibana Ryomei, but also to experience wearing yukata - the traditional Japanese summer - and playing the flute with the artist.

Ms. Nguyen Thien Kim, the Vice President of Vietnam - Japan Kamishibai Paper Drama Association performed familiar Vietnamese - Japanese folk tales in Kamishibai style such as Rat's Wedding, Thang Bom, Children of the Dragon, Ninja Manmaru, etc. Kamishibai (paper drama) is a renowned Japanese folk art form.

In this Kamishibai art form, the artist used drawings on paper to narrate a story, allowing the audience to fully feel the joy and excitement of the tale.

The program aimed to bring the audience closer to Japanese art and culture by exhibiting statues and models from famous Japanese manga and anime that fans could visit and take photos with.

Van Lang University representatives presented gifts to Japanese artists.

Japan - Vietnam cultural exchange event has contributed to the development of friendly relations between the two countries, enhancing understanding of the Japanese language and culture, promoting the university's academic brand, and international exchanges of Van Lang University.

Van Lang University is working to create opportunities for students of Oriental Studies to study and exchange in Japan by collaborating and planning to implement international programs with top Japanese universities and businesses for quality training, such as Ritsumeikan University, Meiji University, and The Japan Foundation Center for Culture Exchange in Vietnam, etc.
