Engaging, humorous, and informative is what describes the "Power of Voice" talk show for VLU staff and faculty members. The program was part of a series of activities for Vietnamese Women’s Day on October 20th, organized by Van Lang University’s Unions, and attracting nearly 200 faculty members.
On October 20th every year, Van Lang University organizes a celebration of Vietnamese Women’s Day to honor women. In 2023, aiming to provide a valuable experience for every Union member, the Union Executive Committee began decorating the campus on October 19th, also organized the "Power of Voice" talk show hosted by Mr. Tran Trung Quang, a former lecturer of Ho Chi Minh City College of Stage Performance and Cinematics and former Head of the Hosting and public speaking art classes of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Cultural House.
The talk show provided useful information to female Union members, leveraging their inherent strengths, and also supported all of Van Lang University’s staff and faculty members to be more confident in communication, teaching roles, and daily life.
The old saying “Hoc an hoc noi, hoc goi hoc mo” (means to learn from the basics) advises us to communicate skillfully with those around us, behaving appropriately in different situations. From speech and communication mannerisms to daily behavior, those have been placed in an important spot, requiring meticulous training and cultivation. For women, their voice is one of the great invisible powers, supporting them in nurturing families, raising children, as well as expressing their opinions and roles in society.
MSc. Tran Thi Thu Thuy, Chairwoman of Van Lang University’s Unions, stated: “The “Power of Voice'' talk show is part of the activities celebrating Vietnamese Women’s Day on October 20. Having an inspirational voice will certainly create attraction, affection, and a good first impression. The Executive Committee of Unions hopes that the sharing from Mr. Tran Trung Quang will offer you better ways to adjust your voice and mannerisms to become more confident and suitable for teaching duties as well as daily communication.”
At the event, speaker Tran Trung Quang pointed out communication mistakes such as incorrect tone, improper intonation, and unsuitable message delivery methods, etc. He also listed out 11 tones to avoid and reasons that can lead to these mistakes for participants to examine more clearly and minimize violations. With his witty and humorous, yet also professional approach, Mr. Quang guided lecturers in recognizing their vocal flaws and applying simple, effective correction methods. Mr. Quang said that exercises such as counting improve vocal issues, enhance concentration, lengthen breath control, and maintain aesthetically pleasing mouth shape.
Besides an attractive and compelling voice, an engaging, professional, and convincing demeanor is needed to create a positive impression and attract the audience. Addressing the concerns of lecturers in teaching, Mr. Tran Trung Quang gave helpful advice on choosing elegant attire for men and women in the academic setting, how to move in a flexible, natural yet professional manner for the academic environment, illustrated by 9 movements for men, 15 for women.
Additionally, on Vietnamese Women's Day, VLU Unions presented gifts to the women attending the "Power of Voice" talk show. MSc. Hoang Khanh Chi, currently working at the Department of External Relations, shared: “I am thrilled to receive this surprise gift from the Unions at this event today. The talk show has provided valuable information and useful lessons so that I can improve myself more and more.”
Attending with his colleagues, MSc. Dr. Phan Thanh Cong, lecturer of the Faculty of Medicine, said: “I had an energetic afternoon thanks to the humorous yet compelling lecture. My colleagues and I had a chance to understand the secrets to having an inspiring voice. I believe this will be a valuable lesson for me to progress and innovate my teaching style when reaching out to the dynamic Gen Z students. Thank you to the Executive Committee of Van Lang University’s Unions for a worthwhile event.”
