Many perspectives from law training units across the country were proposed at the scientific conference “Research-Oriented And Application-Oriented Legal Training In Vietnam Today”. The conference was conducted by Van Lang University, in collaboration with the Executive Board of the Vietnamese Law School Network (VLSN).
Currently, there's a rising demand for skilled professionals in law, which requires training institutions to update their curriculum, innovate teaching methods, and help learners gain early access to practical working environments and accumulate experience starting from their academic years.
To foster connections, share academic insights, encourage collaboration, and enhance the quality of training, on March 14, 2024, Van Lang University coordinated with the Vietnamese Law School Network to organize a scientific conference “Research-Oriented And Application-Oriented Legal Training In Vietnam Today”. Over 100 representatives from 59 law schools across Vietnam gathered to discuss and propose strategies for promoting research-driven and practical legal education in the country.
In the opening address at the conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi My Dieu shared: “With the rapid development of digital technology, the pressing need for educational institutions to prioritize enhancing learners' abilities and staying abreast of practical knowledge. On the journey to carry out the mission of spreading knowledge, and connecting the academic community, Van Lang University always actively exchanges training orientations with esteemed partners. Thus, this conference is a pivotal moment, offering a platform for holistic learning and collaborative efforts in law-focused education and specialized research.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Vu Nam - Head of the Executive Board of the Vietnamese Law School Network expects that the conference will be a ''wind of change'', fostering the creation of a more streamlined and impactful curriculum framework.
The report suggests developing a research-focused curriculum. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung, the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Economics - Law, provided an outline emphasizing the alignment of objectives and criteria. Using the University of Economics - Law's experience in designing a research-centered Law program as an example, Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung emphasized the importance of capitalizing on the institution's unique and potential strengths while ensuring learners are equipped with a well-rounded skill set.
Using a comparative approach, Dr. Vu Thi Thuy, the Deputy Dean of Van Lang University's Law Faculty, highlighted the similarities and discrepancies in the input/output criteria between the Master's programs in Vietnam and Australia. Based on her research findings, Dr. Vu Thi Thuy has put forward several suggestions aimed at enhancing the direction and operational capabilities of training institutions in Vietnam.
To address the challenges encountered by learners, MSc. Tran Cao Thanh, a lecturer at the University of Law - Hue University, has proposed several solutions to aid in research endeavors, internships, and the execution of theses and projects. Subsequently, this has facilitated the advancement of the evaluation and execution process, encompassing the identification and consolidation of training principles and directions. Additionally, it involves assisting students in their research efforts, broadening avenues for collaboration, and fostering connections with businesses.

Based on the approval and trial run of student competencies, specialists deliberated on the shortcomings in research material, emphasizing the need to identify and gauge output standards. The outcomes of research and expert discourse at the conference serve as crucial insights for law training institutions to consult and analyze from various angles, aiding in the creation and enhancement of suitable learning directions for students.
