Smart technology by smart individuals - Learning the AI applications with VLU Architecture students

In an era where artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving, the AI era is impacting many fields, including architecture. The convergence of architecture and AI opens up a new world full of potential. On November 25, 2023, the Faculty of Architecture held a workshop titled “Application of AI technology in architectural design'', attracting a large number of students eager to learn about AI applications in their majors. 

The program was attended by the Faculty’s Board of Directors and guests from the AI+Design VN group, all of whom have significant expertise in the field of architecture and the AI applications: MSc. Luc Ba Phuc Hung - Sejong University, Architect at NDA Group; Architect MSc. Nguyen Bao Anh - University of Melbourne, Architect at Surbana Jurong; Architect MSc. Nguyen Huu Thai An - Van Lang University, Lecturer of Faculty of Architecture.

Architect MSc. Nguyen Bao Tuan, Deputy Head of Architecture, discussed  advantages of AI technology in the realm of education: "AI technology is dominating all fields and industries. You can use AI correctly to promote a time-efficient learning experience. I hope the workshop will help Architecture students update new trends, apply technology in projects, and master these tools to develop a variety of personal-style products.” 

MSc. Luc Ba Phuc Hung - Lecturer at Sejong University, Architect at NDA Group - has shared some insights into the process of developing AI, comparing current AI applications, and the relationship between AI and architectural design. He said: “Intelligent technology can only be maximized by ''smart'' individuals - AI has its own advantages and disadvantages, we should see it as an important tool to support humans.”

MSc. Nguyen Bao Anh, Architect at Surbana Jurong, presented the ChatGPT application and its pros and cons for humans, particularly architects. Simultaneously, MSc. Nguyen Bao Anh provided students with AI tools that can be used efficiently in the field of architecture. He hoped that architecture students will comprehend and apply the capabilities of AI's versatility in the process of building innovative products for the 4.0 era.

In response to the concern that the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) may lead to the loss of creative thinking and individual style, Architect MSc. Nguyen Huu Thai An, a Lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture, Van Lang University said: “AI is like an ever-open book, creative professionals and AI can complement each other and create cumulative effects. Relying too much on AI may dilute one's uniqueness, but completely dismissing it can lead to stagnation. We should leverage its technology to stay ahead. I believe that using AI correctly in architecture design will not hinder creative thinking or individual style.” 

In light of the robust development of Artificial Intelligence, Van Lang University incessantly encourages its students to stay updated, learn, and appropriately apply AI in their studies, enabling more effective learning and a strong foundation for future careers.
