The beauty of the Land of the Rising Sun transcends its breathtaking natural landscapes to encompass the uniquely distinctive wooden architecture. Enduring through the ages, these wooden residences have emerged as a cultural symbol, vividly mirroring the dynamic life in Japan.
On November 28, 2023, the Faculty of Architecture collaborated with Aureole Construction Software Development Inc. (ACSD) to organize a specialized talkshow on "Wooden Houses - Essence of Japanese Architecture." The event aimed to explore the unique aspects of construction techniques using wood in Japan and foster connections between students and the businesses, offering quality internship and employment opportunities.
This talk show followed the success of the "Wooden Houses - Essence of Japanese Architecture" workshop and the similarly themed design competition held in July 2023, which was a joint effort between ACSD, the Faculty of Architecture, and the Interior Design Major of Van Lang University.
Four months before the "Wooden Houses - Essence of Japanese Architecture" seminar, the Faculty of Architecture extended invitations and shared plans with ACSD Japan. According to MSc. Nguyen Bao Tuan, a lecturer in the Faculty of Architecture, “The overarching goal of the Faculty of Architecture through this program is for all students to foster a deeper understanding regarding traditional Japanese housing architecture and visualize the responsibilities of a skilled architect through the experiences of those who came before them.
Utilizing distinctive techniques, the Japanese have innovated wooden houses to become distinctive and convenient, with common features of large roofs and verandas for a comfortable living space, and flexible interior design, allowing easy rearrangement for personalized decoration. Architects prioritize natural materials like paper, straw, and clay for windows and partitions, minimizing the use of colored paints to highlight the innate uniqueness of raw materials.
Participating in the thematic talk show, Mai Tuan Hung, a Course 27 student, expressed, "I have a profound interest in Japanese architectural style. Therefore, when given the chance to explore the unique homes in Japan, I promptly signed up. This seminar has provided me with valuable insights into various aspects of lifestyle, cuisine, and living arrangements in Japan, rarely found in any books or articles."
The "Wooden Houses - Essence of Japanese Architecture" talk show, in collaboration with Aureole Construction Software Development Inc. has deepened students' understanding of the place that "connects the Japanese spirit with nature". It is hoped that, guided by experienced seniors, architecture students now grasp a clearer understanding of the real-world aspects of their work, inspiring them to continuously improve their skills and become outstanding architects in the future.
