In the framework of the project “Nano-assisted bioremediation of diffused dioxins in soil and sediment” jointly launched by the Faculty of Environment of Van Lang University and the Faculty of Environment of Emory University (USA), in September 2023, a team of environmental experts worked with leading professors here.
At the meeting, VLU’s experts and two leading professors from Emory University, Prof. Dana Barr and Prof. Eri Saikawa, who has collaborated for many years with the Faculty of Environment, summarized activities and results of the project in 2 years, discussed activities for the third year, and planned for an international project summary seminar. Both parties also use this occasion to discuss training activities and scientific research between VLU’s Faculty of Environment and Emory University, offering opportunities for scholarships and Master's and Doctorate curriculums in the USA for VLU students majoring in Environmental Engineering Technology. It is expected that the two professors will attend the international project summary seminar in Vietnam and directly interview potential students in June 2024.
In the framework of Climate Change subject by Prof. Eri Saikawa, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh talked about the current status of air pollution and climate change in Southeast Asia, as well as the research on co-benefits of controlling emissions. This has been proved by her own studies with the example that minimizing burning straw and agricultural waste levels can reduce the amount of pollutants and greenhouse gases including CO2.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thi Kim Oanh, Dean of the Faculty of Environment at Van Lang University, introduced to Emory University students and lecturers the projects on training, raising people’s capacity and awareness of environmental issues in Ho Chi Minh City, which have been implemented by the Faculty of Environment (VLU) in recent years. She also displayed the results of research on the treatment of dioxin residues in soil and sediment in the “Nano-assisted bioremediation of diffused dioxins in soil and sediment” project that will help improve the current environmental situation at Bien Hoa Air Base, Dong Nai Province. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thi Kim Oanh also said that VLU’s Faculty of Environment is willing to support and welcome Emory University students to intern in Vietnam or participate in research related to the Southeast Asian region.
