In addition to theoretical lessons in the lecture halls and practice in laboratories at the university, 3rd and 4th year students of the Health majors at Van Lang University will begin to practice at medical facilities, large hospitals and pharmacies, as an important step in preparing the necessary skills for future practical work.
Internships at large hospitals not only help students majoring in Pharmacy, Nursing, and Medical Laboratory Technology to gain more professional knowledge and skills, but also to experience and practice mindset. This is also the time when future doctors and pharmacists are directly exposed to real-life situations that they will face later in their careers, accumulating experience to reflect and handle urgent situations.
Starting from 2021, students of Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, and Pharmacy have begun the process of "hospitalization and medical records" at large hospitals such as Thong Nhat Hospital, Military Medicine 175 Hospital, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, Rehabilitation Hospital - Occupational Disease Treatment, 30-4 Hospital, An Binh Hospital, Hung Vuong Hospital, District 11 Hospital, Le Van Thinh Hospital, Thu Duc City Medical Center, OPV Pharmaceutical Company (Dong Nai), Moc Hoa Tram Pharmaceutical Company (Long An), Tipharco Pharmaceutical Company (Tien Giang), PhaNo Pharmacy System, Davipharm Pharmaceutical Enterprise, FPT Long Chau Joint Stock Company, An Khang Pharmacy Chain...
Depending on the requirements of the modules and subjects, each internship will last from 2 to 15 weeks. As of June 24, 2023, the Department of Health Sciences of Van Lang University has organized more than 30 internships with the participation of more than 1,000 students.
Participating in internships, students will become familiar with tasks including taking and preserving samples, operating and maintaining equipment and machinery, performing testing skills, reading and analyzing test results. They also do experiment and learn from experts about knowledge of Biochemistry, Hematology, Microbiology - Parasitology testing, drug production processes, pharmaceutical preparation, and develop health care plans for people. With a strict and professional working process, young doctors and pharmacists have the opportunity to master routine testing techniques, hone their communication skills and improve their usage skills in modern machinery and equipment.
Internships bring many opportunities and benefits, but also require students to face many challenges and responsibilities. Future doctors and pharmacists must ensure patients’ safety, strictly follow hospital rules and procedures, and face emergency and complex situations. This requires you to constantly equip yourself with knowledge and flexible thinking to handle all situations.
Having gone through 3 internships at 30/4 Hospital, An Binh Hospital, 175 Hospital, student Mai Quoc Bao - Course 25 in Medical Laboratory Science said: “Through the work at the Department of Testing like taking blood samples, testing samples to return the results, I have the opportunity to have direct contact with patients and get first hand experience. At the hospital, where there are modern items of equipment, I can also update new technologies. The hospital environment has many differences compared to the time studying at school, but the skills learned from teachers at Van Lang University are very practical and highly applicable.”
