On October 27th, 2024, with the philosophy of learning through experience, the Faculty of Architecture at Van Lang University organized a workshop entitled “Mastering Sketching and Rendering Skills in Architecture”. The event featured leading experts in the field who shared their insights and knowledge with the students. This workshop provided an opportunity for students to strengthen their foundational knowledge and enhance their practical skills in sketching and rendering – two essential abilities for any architect.

In the session titled “Sketching for Heritage Preservation and Global Connection”, Architect Vu Duc Chien, founder of Urban Sketchers Vietnam, emphasized the deep connection between sketching and heritage. According to the Urban Sketchers’ philosophy, the speaker highlighted that “Sketching is a journey of real-life experience, where artists immerse themselves in a space, directly perceive the surroundings, and spark creative inspiration”. These genuine emotions are conveyed through each stroke, contributing to the documentation, preservation, and dissemination of cultural heritage.

To help students differentiate between sketching and rendering, Architect Bui Hoang Bao, co-founder of MIA Design Studio, shared practical tips for applying these skills in their second-year design projects. The speaker noted that while technology has significantly supported the creative and analytical processes of engineers and architects, the ability to hand-draw remains crucial. All experts agreed that new ideas and discoveries arise naturally when the mind and hand work together on the drawing board.

The workshop provided an opportunity for the freshmen of Class 30 in the Architecture program to interact with experienced professionals in the field.

To encourage students' creativity, the speakers organized a sketching competition with unique themes, enabling students to review their knowledge, apply it effectively to their assignments, and express their personalities through their artwork.
