Workshop "Practice machine learning and artificial intelligence on Kaggle – the professional open-source platform" with experts

On August 22, 2023, the Institute for Computational Science & Artificial Intelligence organized a workshop on the topic "Practice Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence on Kaggle – the professional open-source platform". At the workshop, staff and lecturers of Van Lang University also learned the introduction and basic practice of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

Kaggle is an online platform for the Machine Learning (ML), AI, and data science communities. Users can use Kaggle to share, search, and publish datasets, explore and build AI models, connect and work collaboratively with leading machine learning scientists and engineers worldwide. At the same time, Kaggle users can participate in international competitions. Unlike usual programming competitions, Kaggle competitions are based on real-world data science problems encountered by large businesses and organizations worldwide. As a result, this offers a fertile ground as well as a significant challenge for those with innovative strategies to overcome.

The Workshop was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thoi Trung, Institute Director, Dr. Nguyen Sy Tuan, Head of Laboratory for Computational Mechanics, Institute for Computational Science and Artificial Intelligence. Over 40 lecturers and school staff participated in the event. 

At the Workshop, Dr. Nguyen Sy Tuan and Van Lang University staff and lecturers learned about the Kaggle model's nature and operation, practiced tabular data mining, and utilized the Pandas library. Furthermore, lecturers can practice simple exercises such as selecting input parameters, preparing data, using machine learning to predict real estate prices, and performing some pre-tests before evaluating results to understand and avoid important problems in model evaluation.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thoi Trung, Director of the Institute for Computational Science and Artificial Intelligence shared: "In the past, when applying AI in computational mechanics, I realized that this is a potential software and will undoubtedly come to the age when AI peaked. Through many calculations, we hope to optimize AI applications in a variety of fields, especially in computational mechanics."

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thoi Trung also added that AI is a fertile land, on that land there are many opportunities and AI can be completely integrated into all industries. AI needs to be more widely disseminated so that not only staff and lecturers but also Van Lang students will understand and utilize AI. One day, Van Lang students will be able to advance to scientific research in their field of expertise.

Digital transformation is now an inevitable global trend, having a significant impact on the economic, political, social, and educational fields of countries all over the world. Van Lang University, in that context, has pioneered the application of digital transformation in the field of education. The Ministry of Education and Training agreed to propose a pilot project to shape Van Lang University into a digital university in 2021. Technology application has been and will be present in the majority of the University's training, research, management operation, and internal development activities.

This workshop is part of Van Lang University's training and team development activities, with the dedicated guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thoi Trung and Dr. Nguyen Sy Tuan, Van Lang University lecturers and Faculty members, have grasped the essence and can practice the basic Kaggle model, testing the application of the Kaggle model to predict the market. With the knowledge gained in the workshop, Van Lang University lecturers and students will be able to apply AI in their work, study, and professional fields in the future.
